Why is treatment done earlier than admission?

Sometimes, when a case is urgent and vital, hospitals may proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalization of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts.

That's why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Background

Hajara is a 24-year-old woman living with her husband, Ali, in a modest two-bedroom house. Ali is a farmer earning about ₦4,000, while Hajara sells yam from home to support the family. Their limited income makes it difficult to meet basic needs and afford unexpected medical expenses. At term, Hajara presented with severe pre-eclampsia complicated by fetal distress, requiring urgent medical attention. She was assessed and closely monitored, including her blood pressure, urine output, general condition, and the baby’s heart rate. She was stabilized with medication to control her blood pressure and magnesium sulfate to reduce the risk of seizures. Because she was at term with signs of fetal distress, the medical team prepared for urgent delivery to protect both mother and baby.

Prognosis

Hajara’s severe pre-eclampsia at term, complicated by fetal distress, is a serious obstetric emergency requiring immediate treatment and timely delivery. If left untreated, it can rapidly progress to seizures, stroke, organ damage, placental abruption, fetal distress, or death of the mother or baby. With early recognition, prompt stabilization, and appropriate delivery, Hajara has a favourable prognosis. Continued monitoring after delivery is important, as complications can persist or develop during the postpartum period. The baby’s prognosis depends on the severity and duration of fetal distress and the condition at birth.
