Why is treatment done earlier than admission?

Sometimes, when a case is urgent and vital, hospitals may proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalization of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts.

That's why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Background

Audrey is a cheerful and caring four-year-old girl in Grade 1 and the youngest of six children. She lives with her family in a rural area and enjoys attending school, singing, drawing, and playing with friends. Her father supports the family through small-scale farming, earning approximately KSh 1,000 monthly from selling vegetables. This limited income must provide food, school supplies, healthcare, and other necessities. The family lives in a three-room mud house with cow-dung floors, no electricity, and relies on well or borehole water. Audrey developed chest tightness, wheezing, fever, and excessive sweating. As her condition worsened, she was admitted for assessment and treatment. Her guardian became distressed about the hospital bill and was found crying, unsure where she could borrow the required money. A Helpster volunteer directed her to the coordinator at Al Ihsaan Health Centre, where Audrey was enrolled for assistance. The doctor confirmed her symptoms and recommended continued admission for investigations, treatment, and close monitoring, supported by Helpster Charity.

Prognosis

Audrey was seriously ill with severe malaria and required admission for intravenous antimalarial medication, supportive care, and close monitoring. Without prompt treatment, the condition could lead to severe anaemia, breathing difficulties, convulsions, organ damage, or death. Her immediate prognosis is favourable because treatment was started promptly. Full recovery is expected with completion of treatment, adequate hydration and nutrition, and follow-up. Her guardian should seek urgent care if fever, weakness, breathing difficulty, convulsions, vomiting, or poor feeding recurs.
