TerryAnn is a six-year-old child who attends a local public primary school and lives with both parents in a rural village. The family depends on small-scale farming for its livelihood, but the limited income is often insufficient to meet basic household needs, including essential healthcare. TerryAnn was taken to hospital after developing vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, loss of appetite, and an inability to eat. Following clinical evaluation and relevant laboratory investigations, TerryAnn was diagnosed with severe malaria complicated by gastroenteritis. Treatment included appropriate antimalarial medication, rehydration, supportive care, and close clinical monitoring.

The patient’s presentation is consistent with severe malaria complicated by gastroenteritis, resulting in fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, dehydration, and generalized weakness. The condition is potentially serious and warrants prompt inpatient management with appropriate antimalarial treatment, fluid and electrolyte replacement, symptomatic care, and close monitoring for complications. Prognosis Guarded to good with timely and appropriate treatment. With early initiation of treatment, adequate hydration, and careful monitoring, the patient is expected to make a good recovery. Prognosis may become poor if treatment is delayed or if complications such as severe dehydration, severe anaemia, altered consciousness, hypoglycaemia, or organ dysfunction develop.
