Gabriel is the third-born child in a family of four and attends Grade 4 at a rural school. Although both parents are alive, his mother is the household’s sole breadwinner. The family lives in a rented two-room house, shares a pit latrine with neighbours, and obtains water from a community borehole. His mother sells second-hand clothes, but her monthly income rarely exceeds KSh 3,000, making it difficult to provide for the family’s basic needs and educational expenses. Despite these hardships, Gabriel remains committed to his studies and dreams of becoming a teacher. Gabriel became unwell while at school, developing a high fever, persistent vomiting, and loss of appetite over three days. His class teacher contacted his mother and advised her to seek medical attention. She took him to Mechimeru Health Centre and informed the facility in-charge that she could not afford the treatment costs. She was reassured that Gabriel would receive the necessary care through Helpster Charity’s support, enabling him to begin treatment without placing an additional financial burden on the family.

Gabriel received prompt medical attention at Mechemeru Health Centre after being diagnosed with severe malaria. He was given the appropriate antimalarial medication, supportive treatment, and monitoring to manage the fever, vomiting, and other symptoms. Following treatment, his condition improved, his fever subsided, and he gradually regained his appetite and strength. He was discharged after showing signs of recovery and was expected to resume his normal activities and schooling.

The doctor’s prognosis is that with prompt and appropriate treatment for severe malaria, including antimalarial medication, supportive care, adequate hydration, and close monitoring, Gabriel is expected to recover and return to his normal daily activities, including attending school. However, if severe malaria is left untreated, his condition could deteriorate rapidly and may lead to serious complications such as severe anemia, impaired consciousness, seizures, organ damage, dehydration, or even death. Timely treatment is therefore essential to prevent complications and support Gabriel’s full recovery.
