Huraira Mohammed is a 12-year-old girl living with her parents in Gwange, a crowded neighborhood in Maiduguri. Huraira is a hopeful and resilient child, often helping her mother with household chores. Her parents work hard but earn just enough to get by, leaving little room for luxuries like school fees or new clothes. Late afternoon, Huraira began feeling weak. The next morning, however, her symptoms worsened. Huraira woke up with a high fever, chills shaking her small body despite the scorching heat outside. She complained of pain in her stomach and lost her appetite, refusing the little food her mother had prepared. The parent could not attend to her medical need due to financial constrain but only afforded paracetamol which didn't ease her pain. Her neighbor instructed her to visit Nakowa and ask for Help from Helpster Charity. Diagnosed with Malaria and Enteric Fever.

Huraira Mohammed was admitted to the hospital on the 20th of May, 2024, after presenting with fever, body weakness, and other symptoms suggestive of infection. Following medical evaluation, Huraira was diagnosed with malaria and enteric fever. Treatment commenced promptly with Ibuprofen for pain and fever control, Coartem DS for effective malaria management, Amoksilav to treat the bacterial component of enteric fever, and Multivite to support nutrition and overall recovery. The patient responded well to the medications, with gradual resolution of fever and significant improvement in strength and appetite. Throughout the treatment period, Huraira’s condition steadily improved under close medical supervision. By the time of discharge, the patient was clinically stable and had fully recovered without complications. The total cost of consultation and treatment amounted to ₦20,500. Untreated malaria can cause organ failure, severe anemia, and even coma, especially in young children. Enteric fever, if neglected, can result in intestinal perforation, internal bleeding, and widespread infection, potentially leading to death. Both diseases weaken the body significantly, making it difficult to recover without timely medical intervention.
