Kylanclifford W., 4

Kylanclifford is a 4-year-old boy, the youngest of four siblings, and currently enrolled in PP1 at a rural public primary school. He lives with his family, where the father is the sole provider through a small business that supports all their basic needs. The family lives in a rented house, shares a pit latrine with neighbors, and fetches drinking water from a nearby well. Kylanclifford has been diagnosed with sickle cell disease. Just a day ago, he started feeling unwell. Due to financial challenges, his father could only manage to buy painkillers from a nearby chemist. Unfortunately, his condition worsened despite the medication. With no money to afford further treatment, the family felt helpless. At present, he is experiencing headaches and fatigue with severe pain on swallowing.

Kylan, who has sickle cell disease, was diagnosed with malaria and received treatment until he was stable and cheerful again. He was then discharged to continue recovery at home. His mother expressed gratitude to Helpster Charity Organization for providing free medical care. Kylan has since recovered and returned to school. He takes his medication regularly, and his teacher has noticed that he is more active in class and generally happier. Kylan was also given medication to be taking for 9 consecutive months, hopeful that at the end of the 9 months, they will have found an alternative way of getting the daily medication

In children or individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD), tonsillitis can have a more complicated prognosis compared to the general population due to their weakened immune system and higher risk of infection-related complications. Kylanclifford was given medication and if it could have remain untreated sickle cell anemia leads to severe health complications, including pain crises, organ damage, stroke, and infections, potentially resulting in premature death. The abnormal, sickle-shaped red blood cells clog blood vessels, restricting oxygen delivery to vital organs and tissues, leading to these problems.
