Cynthia N., 21

Cynthia is a young mother of two who left school in Form Two due to financial difficulties. She lives with her husband and children in a modest two-room mud-walled house. Both she and her husband work as casual laborers in a local gold mine to support their family. In her free time, when she is well, she enjoys listening to music and spending time playing with her children. She learned about Helpster Charity through a friend who shared a flyer with her. Cynthia explained that she was three months pregnant with her third child when the incident occurred. While carrying out her routine duties at the gold mine, she slipped and fell, rolling before coming to a stop. She experienced sharp abdominal pain afterward but chose to ignore it and continued working because she had not completed her shift and feared she would not be paid if she left early. Three days later, as she was preparing to return to work, she began experiencing vaginal bleeding. Due to lack of money for hospital transport and medical care, she remained at home and drank warm salty water in the hope that it would help. Later that night, she had a miscarriage of the baby at home. She continued bleeding for about a day before it subsided. After staying home for some time, Cynthia felt compelled to return to work to avoid losing her position. While at work, she developed severe, sharp abdominal pain followed by renewed bleeding. She reports that she lost consciousness and later woke up in the hospital with no memory of how she had been transported there.

Cynthia came with complaints of abdominal pains, severe bleeding after a miscarriage at home .She was transfused blood, and administered broad spectrum antibiotics as well as painkillers. Some of the drugs administered include: ranferon, ceftriaxone among other medications. She responded well to medication and was eventually discharged on orals.

The prognosis for severe anemia (hemoglobin < 7 g/dL) following a miscarriage is excellent if treated promptly, though recovery requires several months. Without intervention, severe anemia can lead to critical organ strain or life-threatening complications.
