Sapphire Kawira is the second-born child in her family and is currently being raised by her mother following the passing of her father. She is a Grade 8 pupil, known by her teachers and classmates as a bright, disciplined, and hardworking girl. Sapphire enjoys playing handball at school and often shares her dream of becoming a doctor one day so that she can help people who are suffering from illnesses. In 2023, Sapphire began experiencing health problems. She initially complained of a severe burning sensation in her stomach accompanied by persistent abdominal pain. As time went on, she started developing joint pains, which gradually became more severe and began affecting her ability to participate in school activities. Later, she also developed intense headaches, sometimes associated with blurred vision. Her condition continued to worsen, and currently she is unable to walk but can only stand with difficulty. Her mother has taken her to several nearby health centres in search of treatment. Unfortunately, the facilities were unable to properly diagnose her condition. Due to financial constraints, her single mother was not able to take her to a higher-level hospital for specialized care. Sapphire’s prolonged absence from school deeply concerned her teachers. One of her teachers later came across a poster from Helpster Charity, which supports vulnerable patients to access medical care. The teacher decided to seek assistance on Sapphire’s behalf and approached Consolata Hospital Nkubu to request help for the child. Through this intervention, Sapphire was finally evaluated by specialists at the hospital. After medical assessment and investigations, she was diagnosed with Helicobacter pylori induced gastritis, which explained the persistent stomach burning and abdominal pain. Further examination also revealed Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis in an exacerbated stage, which is responsible for her severe joint pain and difficulty in movement.

The doctors noted that the delay in accessing specialized medical care contributed to the progression and worsening of her symptoms. Management will require targeted antibiotic therapy to eradicate the H. pylori infection, medications to reduce stomach inflammation, and specialized treatment for juvenile arthritis, including anti-inflammatory medication, pain management, and close monitoring by specialists. Due to the severity of her joint inflammation, Sapphire will require continuous medical follow-up, physiotherapy, and supportive care to control the disease and prevent long-term joint damage. With appropriate treatment, specialist care, and consistent follow-up, Sapphire’s condition can improve significantly. Treatment of the H. pylori infection is expected to relieve her stomach pain and improve her general health. For juvenile idiopathic arthritis, although it is a chronic condition, early and consistent management can control inflammation, reduce pain, and improve mobility, allowing children to lead productive and active lives. With proper medical support, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation, Sapphire has a good chance of regaining strength, improving her ability to move, and eventually returning to school to continue her education and pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.
