Faith S., 18

Faith is the third-born in a family of six. She dropped out of school in Form One due to lack of school fees. She currently lives with her child, her mother, and her siblings in a two-roomed, mud-walled house. She is unemployed and depends entirely on her mother, who earns a living through peasant farming and casual labor to support the family. Despite these challenges, Faith hopes to one day learn tailoring and start her own business. Faith reported that she began feeling unusually tired and was sleeping more than usual. Concerned about her condition, she visited a nearby pharmacy where a test confirmed that she was pregnant. Due to financial constraints and the long distance to the health facility, she was only able to attend one antenatal clinic visit, which required her to walk for more than two hours. On the day of the incident, Faith developed abdominal pain that persisted for two days before she was able to seek medical care at a nearby health facility. Upon assessment, healthcare providers identified that the baby was in a breech position, a complication requiring urgent intervention. She was immediately referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital, where she underwent an emergency caesarean section to ensure the safe delivery of her baby.

Faith was taken for an emergency caesarean surgery, the surgery was a success and she was taken to the post -op ward. While in the ward she was administered ceftriaxone,flagyl, morphine, among other drugs. Her catheter was removed after 2 days, ans ambulation encouraged. The dressing on her surgical site was removed after 72 hrs. She was able to respond well to medication ans she was eventually discharged on orals. A follow up clinic was booked for her to check how she was recuperating.

The delay in seeking medical attention—due to financial constraints and distance to the health facility—placed both Faith and her baby at considerable risk. Prolonged labor in the presence of a breech presentation can lead to complications such as obstructed labor, fetal distress, birth trauma, or even loss of the baby. Faith’s condition was serious but will be successfully managed through emergency surgical intervention. With proper postoperative care, follow-up, and support, she is expected to recover well and resume normal activities. Continued access to healthcare and social support will be important for her long-term well-being and that of her child.
