Samuel Alex, just one year and nine months old, lives with his parents in a modest apartment in Uke Bus-Stop community. His father recently lost his job and is still searching for work, so the family now rests on his mother, Mrs Glory, who sells grains on Uke market days. They depend on a well and a borehole for water. When Samuel developed fever and lost his appetite, his mother tried repeatedly to treat him at home, but nothing worked. She brought him to the hospital, where he looked ill, weak, and feverish, and tests confirmed severe malaria and typhoid. He was admitted and treated for two days with antimalarials and antibiotics, and thankfully, he recovered well and was discharged home.

For a one year child suffering from severe malaria and typhoid fever presents a very serious infectious condition requiring urgent medical attention. The prognosis is guarded at presentation due to increased risk of complications associated with the two diseases. However, with timely intervention and treatment and supportive care the likelihood of recovery is good. Consequently, delayed treatment or the development of severe complications may adversely affect the outcome and increase the risk of morbidity and mortality.
