Victory’s Triumph Over Kidney Disease

Helpster Charity is transforming health outcomes in remote communities across Africa and Asia, restoring hopes and saving lives of underprivileged children and pregnant women. Thanks to the generous support of donors, volunteers and partners, Helpster has funded the medicare of over 900 children and pregnant women.

To encourage our donor community and show the impact of their donations, we curate stories of beneficiaries who have been impacted by our healthcare funding programme. Here's one of the charity stories from Kenya- Victory Kawira's journey with Helpster and how respite was brought to her and her parents. Victory’s story is one of those stories that capture the essence of Helpster’s global campaign for healthcare equality.

Victory, a seven-month-old child, was battling with severe pneumonia, acute kidney injury and malnutrition in a remote village known as Nkubu, Meru County in Kenya. Her parents, economically disadvantaged, could not avail Victory proper medical care. They felt the crushing despair of watching their child suffer without access to essential medical care.

Local healthcare facilities failed to provide the vital medications she needed, worsening her condition. The high fevers, refusal to feed, and endless convulsions turned her parents’ lives into an unending cycle of panic and hopelessness. The parents were advised to go to a more sophisticated hospital but they were financially constrained. How would they afford the medical services?

On April 7th, 2024, Victory was convulsing uncontrollably and her mother was helpless and despondent before a village elder told her about Helpster Charity. With the elder's help, they secured a bike to Consolata Hospital Nkubu, igniting a flicker of hope in their darkest hour. Consolata is one of Helpster’s partner hospitals in Kenya.

When they arrived at the hospital, the medical team quickly examined Victory’s condition and rushed her into emergency care. The medical specialists attended to Victory with utmost professionalism and a sense of urgency due to the critical nature of her illness. They stabilised her, diagnosed severe pneumonia, acute kidney injury, acute malnutrition, and hypoglycemia. There was an imperative need for a comprehensive treatment. Victory’s stable state rekindled some glimmers of hope in her parents. There was a sigh of relief but that's not the end as their daughter was yet to fully recover.

As time progressed, Victory began to show great signs of recovery, with intensive care, including a nasogastric tube for nutrition and IV fluids to restore her hydration. The healthcare specialists were committed to ensuring Victory survived the ailment. They worked relentlessly to revive her and heal her frail body. Her mother was by her side all through while the father visited daily. Both collectively praying and hoping for better health for their below-one-year child.

In three weeks, each day opening a new layer of victory for Victory, it became very evident that she was winning the fight as her fever broke, strength returned and eventually, the nasogastric tube was removed. Victory triumphed! By the end of her stay at the hospital, she had fully recovered and her family was filled with joy and appreciation for the extensive medicare their daughter received.

Victory’s story exemplifies the tremendous impact of Helpster Charity's healthcare funding programme. We facilitated medicare for Victory through one of our partner hospitals in her community. We did not only provide critical medicare but also restored hope to a family. You can feel the power of medical charity in Victory’s journey with Helpster. Lack of financial means almost cost the parents their daughter's life but the elder's compassion and Helpster’s support, enabled by the generosity of our donor community, turned despondency into hope; sadness into joy; and sickness into good health. A total of 820 USD was donated by Helpster Heroes to offset Victory’s hospital bills and she was discharged on April 24th, 2024.

Victory’s health is a testament to the impact of Helpster Heroes. Her story shows the importance of community and the difference that charitable organisations, like Helpster, make. Her life was saved because of the support we get from donors like you. With more support, we believe Helpster will create more lasting impact in underserved communities.
